Linien und Fläche Black

Perceptual kinetic sculpture, 2021/2024

As in Linien und Fläche (Lines and Space), a dialogue unfolds between structure, space, and perception. Yet here, the material remains impenetrable. The rods are coated with Black 3.0 – a pigment that absorbs nearly all light and eliminates reflection. Developed by Stuart Semple in response to the exclusive artistic rights once claimed over Vantablack by Anish Kapoor, it stands for openness and shared artistic access – a quiet statement on equality and visibility, held in almost absurd contrast to the material’s own attributes.

The work appears as if cut directly from the wall. The black withdraws from sight while sharpening perception itself. Where the copper in Linien und Fläche creates resonance and reflection, this surface resists visibility. The lines emerge as pure boundaries – and yet, with every step, the configuration shifts once again: lines move, intersect, form new spaces, and dissolve.
