Linien und Fläche

Perceptual kinetic sculptures, 2023/2020/2016

Linien und Fläche (Lines and Space) explores the shifting relation between structure and perception – between line, boundary, and the spaces they define.

A network of copper-plated steel rods extends from the wall into the space. It seems to expand outward, drawing lines while cutting through the surface behind it. With every step, the configuration shifts: lines separate, intersect, reconnect into changing spaces, and dissolve again.

What appears to be a fixed structure transforms in perception. Perspective becomes movement, distance and proximity turn into participation – every change gives rise to new relations.

Light extends this motion. It traces the lines as shadows on the wall, creating new spaces and altering their relations. As sunlight moves across the day, the projection wanders as well – even in stillness, the spaces continue to change.

The copper carries this thought within it: conductive, reflective, connected. Its shine is preserved by a protective layer and at the same time isolated from its surroundings – a closed system that allows resonance only through perception, a material between constancy and transformation.

Linien und Fläche (Lines and Space) is a reflection on perception and boundary, on the relation between structure and movement, light and space. A sculpture that never stands still, continuously reassembling itself through the gaze of its viewers and the space it inhabits.
